Spring Term: Welcome Back

Over the last two days I have received a number of projects to complete. To begin with there will be a Spring exhibition (27th Jan) in which work will be presented that has been inspired by another student. The student that I was given to draw inspiration from was Laura Bridges. After looking over her Autumn Assessment page I do not feeling particularly inspired, however I am sure that after further research and interview Laura, I will feel more enthusiastic about this task.

My Studio group were given the task of researching a video from a set of 50. Next Tuesday I will be giving a presentation on “Hand Catching Lead” (1968) by Richard Serra.

For the end of the Spring term I am to exhibited a piece of art anywhere on campus. I met with Anastasia and having found many similarities (including both working in video and sculpture this term), we have decided to make this piece a collaborative one. We both have been inspired by Africa, in particular it was The Lion King (the musical) that sparked my interest, and for Anastasia it was the destruction of their tribal cultures. One piece we found inspiring was “Couple in a Cage“(1993) by Coco Fusco and Paula Heredia. We also found that we both had been inspired to visit the “Beyond El Dorado” exhibition at the British Museum. From this we will gain inspiration from treasures and the like of other hidden cultures. Tonight we have agreed to research the culture and tomorrow we will explore the campus to see if we can find anything that could be linked. I would like to explore the long abandoned building across the field from the Sports Park Gym. From these photographs we will create drawings and then design a mood board from our research to present next week.  Anastasia had the idea of a volunteer going through their usual daily routine wearing traditional tribal African attire.
